Backlinks are the link that are coming directly towards your website. Backlinks are also know as Inbound Links (IBL's). Search Engines Specially Google gives special importance to quantity of backlinks for any website. Backlinks works like measurement equipment by which Search Engines measures the importance and popularity of that website. Google gives credits to website those have good number of relevant backlinks and considers them as more important and authentic websites then others. The importance of any website can be measured by the Inbound links and the outbound links, if a website has more inbound links then the outbound links, Search Engine will gives more importance and credits to that site. If you are backlinking your website, keep this thing in mind that the website on which you're posting your link is relevant to your website. Search Engines are very keen on relevancy of the backlinks so I highly recommend you to post your links only on relative website. I've seen most of the bloggers posts their links on irrelevant website just because they are allowing to post links free on their website. Well these backlinks have no value in eyes of Search Engines. Search Engines read the keywords of your website and then reads the keywords of other website from the from is coming towards your website, it compares them and if it found relevant, Search Engines gives then + point otherwise count it as a - point. So its better not to have backlinks rather then having tons of irrelevant backlinks.

Reciprocal or Link Exchange: 

Most of the bloggers spend lots of their time on Reciprocal Linking and Link Exchanging and ignores the relevancy with the exchanged links. Reciprocal and Link exchanging used to be considered as helpful for getting higher ranks, but the last google Update ruins this consideration. In order to get backlinks, many webmasters exchange their links with others and most of the times they ignores the relevancy of the site, thus this is discounted by the search engines. So the disadvantage is that the search engine ignores the inbound link and still counts the out bound link.

Avoid Backlinking From The Same IP: 

I've seen many webmasters making this serious mistake. If you have more then one website and you are considering to reciprocal linking with your own website, and if all of your websites are relevant too, then you should be aware if all of those websites are hosted on different servers. I've seen many webmasters register free domains like .co.cc or .tk, and create many websites on their single servers, then use these websites for linking back to their primary website. Well this is what you shouldn't be doing. Yes this is know as Backlink Bombing is Search Engine's eyes, and its a Crime in Search Engine's eyes. So avoid this thing completely.

Using Anchor Text:

What is anchor text? Anchor text is the hyperlinked words on a web page. These are the words you click on when you click a link. Search engines use this text to help determine the subject matter of the linked-to document. Here's the example:

If you are posting your link on other website, always use your keywords as Anchor Texts. This will make your backlink more authentic in sight of search engines. But keep this thing in mind that don't use the same keywords all the time, you must shuffle your keywords and the search engines will consider your backlinks more authentic and organic.

Keep Track of Your Backlinks: 

Not just in the beginning, but always keep good a eye on your backlinks, how others are backlinking to your website, what anchor texts are they using, which websites are linking back to your site and if you are using any link exchange or reciprocal linking program then you must be very aware of if your link partner is still linking back to your site or not? Be Patient in Backlinking: 

This is one of the worst mistake that webmasters usually makes. They find some free do follow blogs or forum links and start posting their website or blog links on those do follow blogs or forums. Sometimes they manage to post links on more then 100 do follow blogs and forums and think that this will be useful for their website or blog. But the result will be really painful, Search Engine considers this kind of backlinks as backlink spamming and blacklists that website. So be patient, do not post of your website link on more then 5,6 websites daily.

Avoid Backlink Posters and Spammers: 

There are lots of free and paid backlink generators are available on net now a days. They posts links on blogs and forums and are called bots. I must tell you that if you ever try to use these bots, you'll not only lose your money on buying those scripts or software, but you'll also lose the ranking in search engines. This type of backlinking is also know as Backlink bombing and backlink spamming, so you should be aware of not to do this serious mistake.
